CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Spartans, ranked #24 in D3football.com national poll for first time since 2011, roll into Cedar Rapids with at least a share of the Iowa Conference regular season title on the line against a pesky Coe team in one of the best rivalries the IIAC has to offer.
In four of the last five meetings, the victor has prevailed by an average of 3.5 points. Expect another thriller after senior LB Blaine Snitker batted away a game-tying 2-point conversion with 1:03 to go in UD’s 29-27 win a year ago.
The Spartan offense continues to roll and put up 40+ points for the third-straight time in win over Loras last week. QB Rio Johnson has been instrumental in the surge and sports a 65.3 completion percentage with 1,394 yards and nine touchdowns to two interceptions in five IIAC games. The Atlanta, Ga. native’s 330 yards and three touchdowns complemented freshman sensation, RB Maurece Herrion’s, fifth-straight game of 87+ yards and 2+ touchdowns rushing in win last week.
Balance is the key as the Spartans utilize stellar seniors, LB Trevor Stauner and CB Oscar White, in anchoring the IIAC’s No 1. scoring and total defense.
Coe is fueled by their up-and-down runner, RB Sam Lahr. The Manchester, Iowa native was named to D3football.com’s national team of the week after racking up 239 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries in win over Luther a week ago.
As Lahr goes, so do the Kohawks. In two IIAC wins, Lahr has 365 yards and five touchdowns, and in three IIAC losses, the senior has mustered 81 yards and 0 touchdowns.
Coming off victory over Luther, Coe has yet to win back-to-back games this season and averages 17.4 points in defeat and 41.3 in wins.
