Football Victorious Over Pacific 31-29

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The University of Dubuque Spartans Football held on late Saturday evening, to capture a thrilling 31-29 victory on the road. The Spartans improve to 2-0 against the Pacific University Boxers and improved their overall mark to 1-2 this season. UD led at halftime 24-14 and the defenses stepped up and kept both teams out of the scoring column in the third quarter. The Boxers rallied in the fourth quarter to score 15 points as UD was held to seven points after a Maurece Herrion five yard run to start the fourth quarter.
The Spartans finished the night with 381 yards of offense, gaining 135 yards rushing and 246 yards through the air. UD's offense struck first with a 19 yard catch by Chris Bagley at 6:42 of the first quarter. A Curtis Prull extra point stretched the lead to 7-0. UD would score quickly again after getting possession on a Boxer fumble. UD used four plays to gain 23 yards and score with Dai-Von Vance Jenkins on a 12 yard rushing touchdown at 5:04 of the first.
UD added 10 points in the second quarter as Herrion scampered two yards for a touchdown with 5:50 left in the second quarter. Prull connected on a 28 yard field goal with 2:41 in the first half. After a scoreless third quarter, UD made the game interesting as they turned the ball over twice in the fourth quarter on a interception and a fumble and the Boxers converted both into touchdowns.
Quarterback Rio Johnson completed 18 of 27 passing attempts for 246 yards in the Spartan victory. Conor O'Malley punted four times for 129 yards for an average of 32.2 yards a punt. Dylan Schultz led UD with four kick returns for 80 yards and caught five passes for 67 yards. The duo of Derek Schambow and Derek Trotter led the defense with nine tackles. The pair would also pick off the Boxer quarterback once each. Schambow returned his interception for 54 yards while Trotter gained 12 yards on his return.
UD will enjoy a week off before opening the Iowa Conference season at home when they will host the Luther College Norse on Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
