BOX SCORE
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Junior Gonzalo Hernandez scored for the third straight game with a penalty kick in the 84th minute as the University of Dubuque men's soccer team finished with a 1-1, double overtime tie at Macalester on Saturday night.

A scoreless first half gave way to a Macalester (0-0-3) goal in the 68th minute of the second half to take the lead. No stranger to last minute heroics, Hernandez's penalty kick with minutes remaining pushed the game to a pair of overtime stanzas. Three games into the season, Hernandez has three goals (one in each game) and two assists. Each goal or assist has either tied the game or been the go-ahead score.

Both teams had their chances in the overtime periods, but couldn't convert after Macalester attempted four shots and the Spartans (2-0-1) shot three times. Senior starting UD goalkeeper, Riley Jensen, re-entered in the first overtime period after sitting the second half and made two clutch saves within a minute and a half window in the middle of the first overtime. Macalester would fail to attempt a shot on goal the rest of the way and provided the last shot of the game for either side in the 107th minute.

Macalester held the edge in shots, 11-8, but dominated in the corner kick department, 12-3. The Spartans handed the Scots their third straight, double overtime tie to open the season. Macalester previously tied #17 Wartburg, 3-3, and UW-Platteville, 1-1.

Hernandez and Kahlin Gonzalez led the team with two shots a piece while Jensen tied a game-high with three saves.

The Spartans dropped to 0-2-1 all-time against the Scots with the other two bouts coming in 2013 and 2014.

UD will host Grinnell College on September 9 at 7:30 p.m. down at Oyen Field.
