Kazmierczak, Murfin Win IIAC Titles on Day One

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Junior Nicholas Kazmierczak defended his Iowa Conference indoor pole vault title while freshman Blaze Murfin won his first in the shot put to lead the Spartans to a second-place showing after day one of the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships.

Kazmierczak and Murfin scored half of UD’s 40 points as the Spartans trail Central’s 51 points after day one.

Only nine events competed in day one as the meet concludes on Saturday.

Kazmierczak vaulted 4.54m/14-10.75 in a big personal record of over 10”+ to win his second indoor pole vault title. The junior cleared the field by over six inches.

Murfin won his fourth shot put title of the season and his first career IIAC title with a toss of 15.25m/50-0.5 to beat the field by a foot-and-a-half. The freshman has already broken UD school records in both shot put and weight throw and will compete in the latter on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore distance runner Alec Bass continued his tear after placing runner-up and setting his fourth school record in six races this season with a time of 14:53.20 in the 5000m. The Hazel Green, Wis. native will seek his first indoor title in the 3000m on Saturday.
