BOX SCORE
DUBUQUE, Iowa - A scoreless battle played out until Leo Lenth's header in the 81st minute off a deflected save gave the University of Dubuque men's soccer team all they needed in a 1-0 victory over Grinnell on Wednesday night.
Lenth's goal off freshman Skylar Showalter's deflected shot broke a scoreless tie that saw multiple missed opportunities from both sides. The Spartans (3-0-1) finally capitalized after dominating possession for most of the game. UD could have scored earlier, but missed a header from inside the goalie box and a couple free kicks late that bent straight towards the goalie. The Spartans had no shortage of good looks at the goal after winning the shot count, 16-6, and the corner kick battle, 9-3, over Grinnell (1-2).
Lenth led the team with two shots on goal and tied for the team lead with freshman Malcolm Phillips for total shots with four. Senior goalkeepers Riley Jensen and Jose Resendiz split time between the first and second half, respectively, and each collected one save.
Reigning Iowa Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, Gonzalo Hernandez, saw both of his shots saved.
UD upped their record against Grinnell to 5-0-1 in the last six meetings.
The Spartans face the Milwaukee School of Engineering on the road this Saturday, September 12 at 3:00 p.m.
