2016 MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENS IN IOWA CITY

 
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Luther College is your 2016 Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championships leader after Round 1 at 300 with Central just a shot off their pace.

Walker Adams of Central and Andrew Betts of Luther are tied for the lead at 73 (+1). Elliot Horst of Luther and Trent Lindenman of Simpson are one shot behind at 74. A group of 5 are sitting at 75 to round out the Top-5 individuals.

Championship Preview

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The 2016 Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championships begins on Friday, April 22 from Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. Friday's opening round begins at 9:00 a.m. Round 2 on Saturday, April 23 will begin at 9:00 a.m. from Finkbine as well. The 72-hole championships will move to Oneota Golf & Country Club for Rounds 3 and 4 on April 30 and 31.


On the first day of the Championship, teams will tee off according to seeding based on the averages from its four best 18-hole team scores during the spring. Players from teams seeded seventh and eighth (Buena Vista and Coe) will tee off in the first wave, followed by players from teams seeded fourth through sixth (Loras, Simpson, and Wartburg) in the second wave. Players from the top-three seeded teams (Central, Dubuque, and Luther) will tee off in the final wave.

Pairings for the final three rounds will be based on the team score following the previous round. Teams placed first through third tee off first in round two followed by teams ranking fourth through sixth in the second wave and teams placed seventh and eighth in a final wave. Three waves will be employed on the second weekend at Oneota Golf & Country Club with teams placed seventh and eighth teeing off first on both days of the tournament's final weekend.

Each school may enter five players for each round with the four best performances each day used to determine the team score. Substitutions are not permitted from Friday to Saturday, however one player who competed the first weekend may be substituted for on the second weekend.

AQ on the Line: The Iowa Conference men's golf champion will be the conference's automatic qualifier to the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship scheduled for May 10-13 at the Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club in Rochester, N.Y.

2015 IIAC Championships Recap: Central ran away from the field in 2015, winning the title by 29 strokes. The Dutch were led byDesmond Stroll and Adam Squires who finished 1-2 with Stroll winning by eight strokes. Squires defeated Dubuque's Josh Schuberg and Coe's Tyler Gunderson in the tie breaker for second. Each of the top-5 individual finishers have graduated.

Top Returning Individual Scorers from 2015: Michael Canfield, Wartburg (6th), Peter Kephart, Luther (7th), Troy Krueger, Dubuque (12th), John Bral, Buena Vista (13th), Logan Bahl, Loras (14th), Britt Vander Linden, Luther (14th), Elloit Horst, Luther (18th), and Tanner Randall, Wartburg (18th).
2015-16 Highlights: The Wartburg duo of Michael Canfield and Hunter Giesselmann each earned medalist honors with Canfield winning at the Wartburg Men's Golf Spring Invite and Giesselmann winning at the Duhawk Spring Invite. Nash Bucherof Central took first place at the William Penn Invitational. Dubuque's Anders Haukoos earned the individual victory at the University of Dubuque Men's Fall Invitational. Trent Lindenman of Simpson won the Simpson Fall Invitational.

IIAC Golfers of the WeekTroy Krueger of Dubuque won the initial IIAC Golfer of the Week honor with an even 72 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational. Joe Fewer of Luther earned the honor in Week 2 with a -1 under par (69) at the Augustana Invitational. The most recent recipient of the Golfer of the Week honor was Hunter Giesselmann of Wartburg after winning the Duhawk Spring Invite. Low Rounds: Chase Manternach of Dubuque fired the low round of the 2015-16 season with a 66 at the Edgewood College Fall Invite. Central's Kacie Broeg was second with a 67 at the Grand View Viking Classic in the fall. The low rounds of the spring belong to Wartburg's Michael Canfield and UD's Tyler Engelken with 70's.
