Sep 10, 2015
LA CROSSE, Wis. - Despite being outshot, 18-9, the University of Dubuque women's soccer team defeated UW-La Crosse on the road, 1-0, thanks to senior Katie Lynn's free kick in the 74th minute on Wednesday night.
Lynn was the offensive catalyst for the Spartans after attempting seven of the team's nine shots. She and her Spartan teammates kept the Eagles (2-2) at bay in the first and led the shot count, 5-4. It was a whole new ball game after the break as the Eagles came out firing and bested the Spartans (2-1-1), 14-4, in shots attempted in the final period. The Spartans took advantage of the opportunities they were given and beat UW-La Crosse in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Lynn, who leads the team with three goals and two game-winners, provided the offense while freshman goalkeeper Paige Dykstra shut out the Eagles with five saves. Dykstra has surrendered just two goals on the season and stopped a total of 17 shots.
The Spartans square off with Lawrence University at home on Saturday, September 12 at 2:00 p.m.
