INDIANOLA, Iowa – Despite a matchup between the sixth and seventh ranked offenses in the Iowa Conference, expect an offensive battle between a pair of Iowa Conference unbeatens (1-0), the University of Dubuque football team and Simpson, in a series that has averaged a combined 68 points scored in each of the last five meetings. Both teams are battle-tested after facing a combined three Top-25 teams and a pair of WIAC schools.
On defense, the Spartans (2-2) will need another big week against a Simpson team that put up 43 points in last week’s victory over Buena Vista. It was an offensive explosion from a Simpson team that had scored just 47 points combined in their first three games (1-2).
The Simpson offense is anchored by a pair of Iowa Conference Offensive Players of the Week in running backs Jordan Beem and Davey Jergens. Each average over 4.9 yards per carry and have scored two rushing touchdowns. Beem, the current IIAC Player of the Week, had a career-high 184 yards and two touchdowns last week and leads the team with 373 yards rushing.
Quarterback Rio Johnson (796 yards and four touchdowns) pioneers a Spartan offensive that put up a season-high 31 points two weeks ago at Pacific (Ore.) and posted an efficient 5.3 yards per play in a 16-14 victory over Luther last week. Johnson’s go-to targets are wide receivers, senior Chris Bagley and Dylan Schultz, who each have 16 receptions.
Reigning Iowa Conference Men’s Athlete of the Week, Spartan linebacker Blaine Snitker, made a splash in his season debut last week with a career-high 21 tackles. The senior leads a Spartan defense that held a run-happy Luther offense to a season-low 231 yards rushing a week ago.
