Ortiz Breaks School Record at Simpson’s Kip Janvrin Open

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Junior Fabiola Ortiz shattered her school record in the 3000m Steeplechase by over eight seconds in placing runner-up at Simpson’s Kip Janvrin Open. Meanwhile, a pair of sprint relays competed at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

No team scores were kept in a meet that featured teams from all divisions, most were partial teams split between the Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open.
Ortiz finished second to a senior from Division I’s North Dakota State as her time of 11:21.05 now leads the Iowa Conference by over six seconds and ranks 41st nationally.
Tanasha Atwater won her fifth straight outdoor shot put title with a toss of 14.14m/46-4.74 and placed seventh, albeit the top Division III finisher, in the hammer throw (50.21m/164-9).
Senior Alexis Higgins was the top DIII finisher after placing fourth in her second high jump of the season (1.60m/5-3).
Drake Relays
The women’s 4x100m relay team of Brittany Burks, Candace Enis, MichelleAnn Sanchez, and Amanda Zbilski placed 34th with a time of 50.74 and the 4x200m relay squad of Burks, Enis, Katrina Pagel, and Aleyha Slatter (1:46.39) finished 13th.
The Spartans head to the Loras Twilight meet next Friday, May 6.
