OSKALOOSA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team battled not only tough competition on Saturday, but a cold and windy mother nature on the opening day of the 2016 Central Invitational Softball Tournament held in Pella and Oskaloosa, Iowa. A wind advisory was in effect with wind over 30 mph and gusts into the mid 40's for most of the state of Iowa on Saturday, Sunday was windy as well, but temperatures reached into the 70's.
The Spartans dropped all four games, losing to UW-LaCrosse by a score of 2-4, Gustavus Adolphus 4-6, #6-ranked Washington Univ.1-7, and to William Penn 1-2. Spartans prepare to open IIAC action on Tuesday when they host Luther College at 3:00 p.m.
UD's Mackenzie Kyle pitched a complete game, suffered the loss against UW-L despite fanning eight batters, faced 36 batters, and allowed three earned runs. The Spartans Taylor Blair went the distance against Gustavus, allowed three earned runs, finished with no walks, and struck out four of the 34 batters she faced.
Megan Schlueter started game three against #6-ranked Washington University and went four innings, giving up four earned runs after 19 batters at the plate. Blair came in for relief and tossed three innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs after facing 16 batters.
In game four against NAIA's William Penn University, Randee Jackson started the game and went four innings before allowing seven hits and two earned runs after 17 batters. Kyle releived Jackson and tossed the final two innings and shut down the offense and didn't allow a hit, struck out two, and faced seven batters.
The Spartans (7-15 overall) continue play on Tuesday at home when UD host the Luther College Norse at 3:00 p.m. in the Iowa Conference opener.
