Freshman starter Mackenzie Kyle posted a team-best 4-1 record over 27.0 innings, including three complete game victories, to lead the Spartans to a 5-5 record over Spring Break.

UD Softball Season Preview

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Spartans finished their 10-game road trip with a 5-5 record down in Kissimmee, Fla. against a flurry of East Coast schools.

First basemen Tori Woltz led the team with a .438 average and 14 hits while freshman starter RHP Mackenzie Kyle emerged as a threat after going 4-1 with a team-leading 2.33 ERA spanning 27.0 innings pitched. Kyle earned a victory in three complete games and surrendered just three earned runs during that stretch.

UD (5-11) kept it close for four of their five wins, but exploded for a season-high 10 runs on 13 hits in six-run victory over Springfield College (Mass.) in their second-to-last day in Florida. 

Catcher Courtney Markin led the team with a .500 slugging percentage and belted two solo home runs in UD's first and last victories of break. They were the only four-baggers of the season for the Spartans.

UD will return to Iowa and head to Cornell this Wednesday, March 23 for a doubleheader this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Kyle, Markin Home Run Leads Spartans to First Win

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Freshman starter Mackenzie Kyle gave up two runs in seven solid innings and sophomore Courtney Markin's solo home run put the University of Dubuque softball team ahead for good in the fifth inning as the Spartans won their first game, 5-2, over Lesley on Sunday morning.

Kyle (1-2) claimed her first career victory after a complete game that featured five strikeouts and 10 hits surrendered. Lesley managed one run each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Markin belted her second career home run as the sophomore's leadoff home run sparked a three-run fifth inning that put the Spartans (1-6) up 4-2. UD added one unearned run in the top of the seventh. Shortstop Brianna Gyrion led UD offensively with a 2-for-3 performance and scored two runs as well.

Lesley (0-1) was led by leadoff hitter, shortstop Selena Quezada who finished 3-for-4 with one run.

It was the first meeting between these two teams.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The University of Dubuque softball team mustered one hit against three pitchers in a 13-1 (5) defeat to Rowan University on Sunday morning.

Designated player, freshman Randee Jackson, registered the Spartans (1-7) only hit in the bottom of the fifth as three Rowan pitchers struck out six batters, allowed one run, and one hit on the afternoon.

Jackson's hit aided UD's only run produced in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk as the Spartans were run-ruled in five innings for the first time this season.

Rowan (7-5) won in five innings for the fourth time this season and totaled 13 runs on nine hits against three Spartan pitchers. It was the first meeting between these two teams.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Senior Tori Woltz totaled half of the University of Dubuque softball team's six hits as the Spartans stranded two runners in the bottom of the seventh of a 3-0 defeat on Monday afternoon.

The Spartans (1-8) outhit Utica, 6-4, behind a strong six-inning start by freshman RHP Randee Jackson, but couldn't get past the Pioneers (2-2). UD's Jackson allowed just four hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Woltz had the game's only double as three Spartans registered at least one hit against a pair of Utica pitchers that threw seven shutout innings. Utica's second basemen Rice led the Pioneers with a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.

Gyrion, Strong Pitching Leads to Victory

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The University of Dubuque softball team was led by a pair of freshmen pitchers in starter Mackenzie Kyle and reliever Taylor Blair and rightfielder Brianna Gyrion's two RBIs in 5-2 victory over Dickinson College on Monday afternoon.

Kyle and Blair each allowed just three hits and one earned run in a combined seven innings as Kyle secured the second win of her career. Kyle also struck out two while Blair earned three strikeouts. 

Gyrion was one of four Spartans with two hits and extended the Spartans (2-8) lead to 5-1, thanks to a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dickinson (1-5) was led by 2B Orden and her three hits as they dropped their second straight contest after an 18-7 rout of Farmingdale State on Sunday.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The University of Dubuque softball team fell short after surrendering four unearned runs and leaving two on base to end the game in a 4-2 defeat to Hamilton College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Spartans (2-9) allowed three unearned runs spanning the fifth and sixth innings as Hamilton took a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh. Freshman Nicole Blum's two-out, RBI-single started the late rally, but the Spartans stranded two after a well-hit lineout ended the game.

UD totaled three hits and three errors on the game.

Spartan starter, RHP Megan Schlueter (0-3), tossed a solid five innings and allowed six hits and three runs (all unearned) while striking out four. Freshman Randee Jackson threw 1.0 shutout innings of relief.

UD stranded eight runners and Hamilton (1-4) left nine hitters on base.

UD Wins 1-0 Dual Behind Kyle's Two-Hit Gem

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Freshman starter Mackenzie Kyle (3-2) allowed just two hits while tossing seven scoreless innings in the University of Dubuque softball team's 1-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday afternoon.

Kyle retired 20 of 26 batters and dropped her ERA to 1.17 over three starts spanning 18.0 innings this Spring Break trip. 

Offensively, all the Spartans (3-9) needed was a 1B Tori Woltz RBI-single in the top of the first inning as Kyle shut down the Diplomats.

UD's two leading hitters over Spring Break, Woltz and three-hole hitter, freshman SS Nicole Blum, each posted a game-high two hits.

Spartans Defeat Springfield After Plating Season-High 10 Runs

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The University of Dubuque softball team jumped out to an 8-0 advantage through the first two innings and never looked back in a 10-4 victory over Springfield College (Mass.) on Thursday morning.

UD (4-9) won their fourth game of Spring Break with a season-high 13 hits led by 3B Brandy Heraty's three hits, including two doubles, and a game-high three RBIs. Rightfielder Brianna Gyrion, SS Nicole Blum, 1B Tori Woltz, and C Courtney Markin each added two hits as all but two Spartan hitters scored at least one run or one hit.

Spartan starter Randee Jackson (1-2) earned his first career win after tossing 4.1 innings while giving up three earned runs, five hits, and striking out four. Reliever Megan Schlueter threw a scoreless 2.2 innings of relief.

The Spartans chased Springfield's (2-5) starter out early after plating four runs and smacking four hits in each of the first two innings. Up 10-1, UD gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Springfield's rally fell well short.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The University of Dubuque softball team couldn't overcome a 7-0 deficit through the first three innings and fell to Ramapo (N.J.), 7-3, on Thursday afternoon.

The Spartans (4-10) made it interesting after mounting a three-run, one-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to cut down the Ramapo lead. Two straight strikeouts with the bases loaded concluded the inning and comeback attempt by UD. 

Catcher Courtney Markin paced the Spartans at the dish with a 3-for-3 effort that included her 2-RBI single in the sixth. 

UD outhit the RoadRunners, 11-9, but stranded 10 runners on the game, twice that of Ramapo. Spartan starter Mackenzie Kyle (3-3) suffered her first loss in four appearances over Spring Break after giving up five earned runs in 2.0 innings. Freshman reliever Taylor Blair tossed 5.0 innings of relief, surrendering just one earned run.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Catcher Courtney Markin launched her second solo home run in Florida and caught starter RHP Mackenzie Kyle as she won her third complete game in Florida to push the University of Dubuque softball team past Washington College (Md.), 3-1, on Friday morning.

Kyle, who posted a 4-1 record with a team-leading 2.33 ERA in five starts this Spring Break, allowed the Shorewomen (7-8) to score their only run off an RBI-single in the top of the seventh. The freshman surrendered just five hits on the day and has given up three runs total in her three complete game victories in Kissimmee.

Meanwhile, the Spartans (5-11) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings fueled by a C Courtney Markin’s second solo homer of Spring Break to leadoff the third inning.

Both teams notched five hits with three Spartans collecting one RBI each.

Spartans Fall Short in Low-Scoring Affair

Senior 1B Tori Woltz, who led the team with a .438 batting average over 10 Spring Break games, plated the Spartans (5-11) only run after hitting a one-out, RBI-single in the top of the sixth. It was too little, too late as the Spartans couldn’t overcome a 2-0 deficit through four innings.

Spartan starter, freshman RHP Taylor Blair, pitched a solid four innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits. Reliever Megan Schlueter tossed two innings of relief and surrendered two hits and one unearned run to Skidmore (4-5).
