Spartans Baseball Captures Easter Sweep Over Rams

Gaetano Florio scored four runs in the pair of Saturday games to help the Spartans capture the sweep 9-0, and 9-2 over the Rams. He finished the three game series hitting 6-11 at the plate

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team rallied back to capture the two-game sweep on Easter Weekend to capture the three game series over the North Central University Rams by winning game two of the series 9-0 and game three by a score of 9-2.

UD scored nine runs off 12 hits and committed just one error in game two as the Rams were held two two hits and committed seven errors in the loss. In the final game of the weekend, the Spartans bats were still warm and they finished with nine runs on 14 hits and played errorless ball as the Rams scored two runs off five hits, but committed three miscues.

Jacob Padilla started game two and secured his second win of the season after five complete innings and faced sixteen Rams batters. He would force them into seven ground outs and four flyouts. Derek Erwin came in for a two inning relief and allowed just one hit after striking out four and faced just seven batters.

Designated hitter Thomas Klempf went 2-3 with a double and a triple to earn a pair of RBI's. Dalton Garst and Tyler Imrich would both go 2-4 at bat.

Daniel Karnick started game three and would face seventeen batters and held the Rams to two hits, one run, 6K's in five innings. Senior Tyler Trifiletti tossed two innings in relief and allowed just one hit after eight batters and struck out four. Derek Kornfeind threw one inning, struck out two and faced five batters. Nathan Schneiderman finished the game for the final inning and allowed two hits and a run and struck out one to help secure the Spartan sweep of the Rams on Saturday.

Eight Spartans collected hits in game three. Tyler Lewan led the offense with 3-4 hitting at the plate. Ryan Karnnick, Jacob Evans, Michael Salazar, and Eric Hall would each finish the afternoon with two hits. Florio, Hall, and Will Doherty would each get a double in the victory.

The Spartans improved to 7-5 overall. Next for UD is a road trip to begin Iowa Conference play in Cedar Rapids, against the Coe College Kohawks on April 1-2. Game time is 1:00 p.m. for both days.
