Spartans Baseball Splits on Sunday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team jumped out early on Sunday and captured the opener over the Coe College Kohawks 5-3 before the hosts returned the favor in game two in a 10 inning extra inning game by a score of 7-6.

Reed Stumpf captured the game for the Spartans and went the complete seven innings after allowing 10 hits and three earned runs after facing 33 batters. He threw 83 pitches with 57 being strikes.

The Spartans left eight runners on base and finished with nine hits. Will Doherty and Jared Clevenger would both finish with a pair of hits in four at bats. Eric Hall earned two of three RBI's for the Spartans and helped spark a four run fifth inning to give the Spartans their first lead of the afternoon. A late rally by the Kohawks with two runs scored in the bottom of the seventh left one runner on base to capture the IIAC victory.

In game two, the Kohawks grabbed an early lead 5-0 after four innings before the Spartans scored twice in the fifth inning. UD tied the game after scoring three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to knot the game 6-6 through nine innings. 

UD opened the 10th with a fly out to right field before Kempf singled to right field. A ground out advanced Kempf to second with two outs before another fly out to right field to end the inning with a runner left on base. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the leadoff batter for the Kohawks would send one deep over the right field fence to capture the contest in a walkoff homerun to Grant Henning who was 4-5 in the game.

Daniel Karnick started the game for the Spartans on the mound and went six innings allowing 10 hits and six earned runs after 29 batters. Derek Erwin pitched the final three innings and took the loss after giving up the late run.

Dalton Garst was the lone Spartan with three hits in the loss. Tyler Lewin Kempf, Gaetano Florio, and Jacob Evans all finished with two hits. Florio and Tyler Imrich each capped off the nightcap with two RBI's each. The Spartans stranded 16 runners on base and played errorless after ending with 15 hits.
