DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque football team entered last weekend’s bye week on good terms after surviving Pacific (Ore.), 31-29, out in Forest Grove, Ore on September 22. Preparation is key this week as the Spartan defense looks to stop a Norse running attack that is the polar opposite of Pacific’s aerial assault.

The Norse sport a run-happy offense that has attempted 23 passes for 182 yards in their first three games. Instead, the Norse utilize a plethora of running backs, including their bell cow and IIAC rushing leader, Christian Moore, who has accounted for over one-third of their total offense with 404 yards on 40 carries and seven touchdowns. Moore, a big play threat who has at least one run of 40+ yards in each of Luther’s first three games, is backed up by Cooper Nelson (144 yards on 12 carries) and Damon Stroup (131 yards on 26 carries and 1 TD).

UD’s upstart offense will need a repeat performance in last win (432 yards and 6.0 yards per play) to counter a Norse offense that averages 36.3 points per game. UD running back and freshman Maurece Herrion had a breakout performance in the Pacific game after carrying the ball 25 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Herrion facilitated an offense that scored 17 points off turnovers and finished 5-of-6 in the red zone.

Linebacker Aric Elton (24 tackles and 4.0 tackles-for-loss) anchors a Norse defense that shut out Grinnell 56-0 a week ago and held UW-La Crosse and St. Olaf to an average of 21 points. The Spartans counter with linebacker Trevor Stauner and defensive back Derek Trotter, who lead the team with 25 tackles. UD will get a boost, just in time for Saturday’s Iowa Conference opener as senior leader and linebacker, Blaine Snitker, returns from injury to make his season debut.
