Spartans to Play in Coe College Mable Lee Volleyball Invite

Oct 21, 2015

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team will participate in the Coe College Mable Lee Volleyball Invite this weekend. Lee chose a career in the teaching of physical education the first time she saw a class of women physical education students at Coe. By her sophomore year she had earned her first Coe letter – for her wok in Swedish gymnastics. She was a 1908 graduate of Coe and spent her life advocating the importance of physical education as a field of study – and, more specifically, the value of physical fitness for all students rather than intercollegiate athletic competition for a few teams.

In 1982, Lee was honored by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as one of the five women in the nation who had meant the most to the women of the country in the area of fitness. When she died on Dec. 2, 1985 at the age of 99, she had an international reputation as a teacher and author, and was listed in Who’s Who in America and 16 similar publications.

The Spartans will face Carroll University on Friday, October 23 at 4:00 p.m. before wrapping up the tournament with matches on Saturday, October 24 against UW-Stout at 9:00 a.m. on court two before playing UW-River Falls at 1:00 p.m. on court one.
