Throwers Lead Women's Track to Win at UD Invite

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Sophomore Tanasha Atwater won both the shot put (13.89m/45-7) and hammer throw (51.38m/168-7) as the throwers amassed nearly half of the University of Dubuque women's track and field's points in a team victory at their very own UD Invite on Saturday afternoon. 

The Spartans took home the crown with 173 points to beat the rest of the 10-team field by 35 points. Loras (138 points) came in runner-up, followed by Clarke University (130). A trio of Spartans in Nicole Forson, Alexis Higgins, and Jordyn Gargus were honored mid-meet as they represented the senior class.

Higgins made here 2016 outdoor debut in the high jump, finishing second (1.60m/5-3) in her first outdoor meet of the season while Forson set a new personal best in the discus (30.32m/99-6) while partaking in the thrower's 4x100m relay that placed eighth.

Atwater won her fourth and fifth outdoor throwing events and also teamed with Forson in the 4x100m relay. Fellow thrower Rebecca Burmahl got her first career win in the discus (43.24m/141-10).

Fabiola Ortiz won the 1500m (4:47.71) and freshman Isabella Solis (1:03.35) won the 400m hurdles to lead the University of Dubuque women’s track team at their very own 10-team UD Invite on Senior Day.

Solis also added a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles for her ninth Top-5 finish of the outdoor season.

Other runner-up finishes included Kiersten Wenthold in the 5000m (19:36.75), Amanda Zbilski in the pole vault (3.04m/9-11.75), and freshman Kelsey Betthauser in the javelin (32.59m/115-9).

Both 4x100m (49.56) and 4x400m (4:13.30) relays placed third thanks to Zbilski and Brittany Burks who competed in both.

The Spartans head to Simpson’s Kip Janvrin Open this Thursday-Friday, April 28-29.
