Apr 20, 2016 | Stacey Ortman

DUBUQUE, Iowa – University of Dubuque will honor undergraduate student research, service learning, and creativity at the fourth annual Apex: Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity from Tuesday, April 26, to Thursday, April 28, in Heritage Center. All events are free and open to the public.

Around 300 students will present over 130 posters and other presentations at the three-day celebration.

Laura Kramer (C’11), assistant producer at LBC radio in London and culture writer for The Upcoming, will present a keynote titled “Movers and Mentors: From Dubuque to London” on Wednesday, April 27, at 10 a.m. in Babka Theatre in Heritage Center.

Kramer recently interviewed actors Neel Sethi and Sir Ben Kingsley, from “The Jungle Book,” at the film’s European premiere. Before her current career, Kramer worked on award-winning documentaries for international broadcasters such as PBS FRONTLINE, BBC and Al Jazeera. Her most recent film, “ISIS in Afghanistan,” in which she was an assistant producer, is nominated for a 2016 Peabody Award.

Mentors have played a pivotal role in Kramer’s life. She said one of those mentors is Alan Garfield, chair and professor of computer graphics and interactive media at UD.

“I physically ran into him the day that I had my interview at the University of Dubuque and I can say wholeheartedly that chance meeting forever changed my life,” Kramer said. “I noticed he was carrying pamphlets for a trip he was organizing to Greece, and I immediately wanted to take part. That was the first of five trips I went on, which helped me realize my passion for storytelling and travel.”
