Women's Soccer Primed to Repeat

Sep 1, 2015

Despite becoming only the second team in school history to bring home both the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) regular season and tournament, the Spartans are primed to repeat with a bevy of talented underclassmen and a trio of veteran leaders.

Players to Watch: The aforementioned trio of seniors of F Katie Lynn, MF Lisa Rosas, and D Kim Trinco anchor a Spartan squad who tied a school record with 16 overall wins a year ago. Lynn, an Honorable Mention 2014 All-IIAC selection, returns with nine goals and two assists from 2014 and could crack the Top-10 UD goal scorers of all-time as she adds to her 18 career goals. Rosas netted two goals and three assists, including the game-winner in a thrilling victory over Loras on the road in overtime, 3-2, in 2014. Trinco holds down a defensive juggernaut who led the Iowa Conference in goals allowed in conference play (5) and overall (44).

Sophomores F Kyleigh McLaughlin and MF Emily Meeker lead a young core of incoming freshmen and transfers after combining for seven goals and six assists in 2014. Second Team All-IIAC selection, McLaughlin, scored two goals in win over Coe and tallied a hat trick of assists in 4-0 victory over Lawrence last year. Meeker's game-winning assist in the 64th minute gave the Spartans a 2-1 victory over non-conference foe, UW-Platteville, in the midst of the 2014 IIAC season.

Schedule: Spartans open up the IIAC season on September 26 at home against Wartburg for the first time since Lynn provided both goals in a 2-1 victory in last year’s IIAC semifinals. Both teams are projected to finish 1-2 in the IIAC. The Wartburg game will take place in the middle of a homestand that features seven home games over a nine-game span. Loras will come to Oyen in the final game of the regular season on October 27 in a rematch of their exciting, back-and-forth affair a year ago.

Head Coach Jason Berna on the upcoming season,“I expect this to be another tough year in the IIAC. Several teams will have the talent to compete for a conference championship. I am excited with the girls we have coming back and the girls coming in that we will have a strong group to try and win our program’s second conference title.”
