Baseball Splits at Concordia-Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The University of Dubuque baseball team split on Tuesday afetrnoon, losing a tough first game 1-2, but rallying back to capture the second 9-7. The Spartans scored nine runs on nine hits and played errorless ball.

The first game was a battle on the mound with both pitchers keeping batters from reaching base. UD scored one run on seven hits and left six runners on base. Concordia scored two runs on six hits and left three runners on base. Tyler Lewan connected on a double to right field in the fifth inning with two outs. He advanced to third on a single by Phillip Byrd, but the pair of Spartans would be left on base after a fly out to end the inning.

UD would make a rally in the sixth on two outs. Austin McWhite singled to second and Thomas Kempf singled to right field. Will Doherty singled to right and scored McWhite. A strike out swinging ended the inning after one run. UD finished the seventh with a pop up to the pitcher, grounded out to second base, and struck out looking. Padilla took the loss after throwing five innings and facing 20 batters. He allowed six hits, two earned runs, struck out three, and did not walk a batter. Derek Irwin tossed one inning, struck out one, forced a fly out, and a ground out.

The Spartans fell behind early in game two by a 0-4 score through two innings before scoring six runs in the fourth and three runs in the six to take the lead which they held on to after allowing a run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth. Marquis Dew led the offense with two hits in three at bats, scored two runs and had two RBI's. Eric Hall had two hits and an RBI, Jacob Evans added two hits and scored a run. The Spartans were able to take advantage of three errors by Concordia while they played errorless ball.

On the mound, Trent Van Egtern earned the start and went three innings before getting relieved by Nick Sewruk. Sewruk tossed two innings to capture the victory after striking out two. Tyler Carlson threw the next two innings and struck out three. Derek Erwin made his second appearance of the afternoon and pitched one inning and fanned three batters. Nathan Scheidermann earned another save by pitching the ninth forcing all three batters to flyout.

UD (9-6 overall) will host the Buena Vista University Beavers this weekend with three nine innings games. A single nine inning game on March 31 beginning at 3:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
