Bass Wins Gold Division of 35th Annual Brissman-Lundeen Invitational
Sep 23, 2016
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Hot humid conditions in late September didn't slow down the University of Dubuque's Alex Bass, who won in a time of 25:51 on Friday afternoon at the 2016 Augustana College Brissman-Lundeen Invite. A field of 313 runners in the Gold Division would be chasing UD's Bass as he crossed the finish line second, but was the winner as an unattached runner who finished nine seconds ahead would not count in the team standings. The Spartans placed 14th in the Gold Division with 390 points.
The 35th running of the invitational would test all of the competitors, with 21 runners unable to finish in the hot fall afternoon. Along with the weather, the spongey, soggy course added a bit of extra weight as mud collected on their shoes. It didn't seem to affect Bass as he was 18 seconds ahead of the 2nd place finisher from William Penn University. The Spartans grouping of the top runners would be within three minutes of each other as they prepare for the tough Iowa Conference Championships in a few weeks.
