PILOBOLUS’s Shadowland has been performed over 1,000 times and seen by more than a million people in 30 countries. It’s a first-of-its-kind presentation of multi-media, shadowplay, and dance. A September 2016 performance in Calgary, Canada, launched the first Shadowland national tour of North America, which follows four successful years touring Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and Asia. The current tour will take Shadowland to 27 cities across the United States between October 2016 to March 2017.
Shadowland is part shadow act, part dance, part circus, and part concert that tells the coming of age story of a young girl’s surreal experience in a sensational world. It combines PILOBOLUS’s legendary approach to modern dance with high-energy, fast-paced multimedia innovation, including multiple moving screens of various sizes and shapes as well as mind-bending merging of projected images and front-of-screen choreography that leverage darkness and light. Shadowland was conceived in collaboration with Steven Banks, lead writer for SpongeBob SquarePants, and propelled by a rhythmic original score by the popular American musician, producer, and film composer David Poe.
PILOBOLUS, which was formed by a group of Dartmouth College students in 1971, performed with Britney Spears and G-Easy on the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards program in August. The pop superstar and rapper performed a mash-up of their hits “Make Me” and “Me, Myself and I” while PILOBOLUS provided a mind-bending visual component using innovative shadow work.
A free Cyber Café Knapp Stage pre-show concert from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. featuring Tapestry, a local four-piece acoustic band, precedes the Shadowland performance.
Tickets for Shadowland can be purchased Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Farber Box Office, Heritage Center, University of Dubuque, 2255 Bennett Street; by phone at 563.585.SHOW; or online at www.dbq.edu/heritagecenter.
Presentation of Shadowland is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from Iowa Arts Council, the Crane Group, and General Mills Foundation.
