Men's Lacrosse Lose Season Opener

MEQUON, Wis. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team kicked off their 2017 season on Saturday against Concordia University and scored first at 12:24, before losing to the hosts 2-19.

Josh Berry-Wingate scored in the first period off a Tyson Svodoba assist. Concordia would rally and take the lead 3-1 before UD's Matt Penalvert sliced the lead to 3-2 off an assist by Svodoba to end the first period. The hosts would then score the next 16 goals to put the game away with three scored with a man up. UD ended the day with 15 shots, 13 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Michael Julius led with five shots. Brandon Jagitsch won three out of seven faceoffs, Berry-Wingate won 3-11 faceoffs, and Ethan Senesac won 1-6 faceoffs.

In the goal, Kyle Mullins made 11 saves and Sam Kopecky made two saves as Concordia compiled 48 shots. Twenty-two Spartans saw action in the contest as Concordia rotated 34 and 12 would finish in the scoring column.

The Spartans (0-1) will host Ottawa on Saturday, Feb. 25 on Oyen Field at 11:00 a.m.
