ROCHESTER, Minn. - The University of Dubuque softball team opened their 2017 season on this weekend at the Luther College Rochester Dome Tourney and finished the tournament 1-3 overall. UD lost the battle in the opening game in extra innings 5-6 to Gustavus Adolphus and rallied back to take the night cap 5-3 over St. Olaf.
Gabby Marchese led the Spartans on opening day with three hits in five at bats (.600) including a double. Nikki Blum finished the day 2-5 at the plate (.400) and an RBI. A quartet of Spartans ended with two RBI's each: DreAnna Heidenreich, Marchese, Brandy Heraty, and Ellie Schneider. UD committed just two errors in 59 chances and stranded 20 runners on base on Friday.
Marchese played all four games and collected three hits in nine at bats for a team leading .333 average on the opening weekend. Courtney Markin grabbed four hits with teammates: Blum, Randee Jackson, Kyleigh Leddy, and Brandy Heraty all finishing with three hits each. UD committed six errors in 116 chances (.951). The pitching staff struck out 12 batters and finished with a team ERA of 3.29.
The Spartans prepare for the warm outdoor action over spring break at the Central Florida Rebel Spring Games in KIssimmee, Fla. on March 12-18.
