Spartans Dominate IIAC Track and Field Performers of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced the Performers of the Week in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling. The University of Dubuque Spartans dominated the track and field honorees by winning three out of four for the week ending on Jan. 23. 

Alyssa Skrove (Fr., Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) won the long jump and triple jump to claim the IIAC Women's Field Performer of the Week. Teammates Alec Bass (Jr., Spring Green, Wis./River Valley HS) won for the second week in a row after setting a new UD school record in a time of 8:31.69 to earn IIAC Men's Track Performer of the Week and Blaze Murfin (So., Dallas City, Ill./Illini West HS) swept the shot put and the weight throw at the Monmouth College Midwest Indoor Invitational to capture the IIAC Men's Field Performer of the Week.

The Spartans continue their indoor schedule on Friday, January 27 at University of Nothern Iowa and on Saturday January 28 at UW-Platteville. UD will host the 2017 IIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 24-25 on A.Y. McDonald Indoor Track in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field – Field Performer of the Week  
Alyssa Skrove, University of Dubuque (Fr., Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS)

  • Skrove captured the titles in both the long jump and triple jump at the Monmouth College Midwest Indoor Invite on January 21st
  • In the long jump, she set a personal best with jump of 5.23m, that ranks 2nd in the IIAC and
  • Skrove also set a personal best in the triple jump with a jump of 11.12m
  • Skrove’s triple jump mark of 11.12m ranks 1st in the IIAC and 20th in NCAA Division III
  • The last Spartan to be awarded Women’s Indoor Track and Field, Field Performer of the Week: Tanasha Atwater (2/15/16)

Men’s Indoor Track and Field – Track Performer of the Week  
Alec Bass, University of Dubuque (Jr., Spring Green, Wis./River Valley HS)

  • Bass and the Spartans competed at the Monmouth College Midwest Indoor Invite on January 21st
  • Bass won the 3000m run with a time of 8:31.69
  • Bass’ time of 8:31.69 is a University of Dubuque record and ranks 1st in the IIAC and 2nd in NCAA Division III
  • Bass was the 5,000 and 3,000M runner-up at the IIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2016

Men’s Indoor Track and Field – Field Performer of the Week  
Blaze Murfin, University of Dubuque (So., Dallas City, Ill./Illini West HS)

  • Murfin and the Spartans competed at the Monmouth College Midwest Indoor Invite on January 21st
  • Swept shot put and weight throw at 2017 Monmouth Midwest Indoor Invitational.
  • Both marks are season best and rank #1 in the IIAC
  • Shot put mark (1st 15.67M/22 competitors) ranks 16th in NCAA Division III
  • Weight throw mark (1st 17.60M/23 competitors) ranks 7th in NCAA Division III
  • Murfin is now a two-time Men’s Indoor Track and Field, Field Performer of the Week (1/22/17, 2/8/16)
  • Murfin was the 2016 IIAC Indoor Track and Field Champion in the shot put and runner-up in the weight throw
