Spartans Drop Non-Conference Battle to Pioneers

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Spartans fell in a non-conference match 2-3 to UW-Platteville on Saturday afternoon.

In the first half, the Spartans were able to get off 13 shots, four of which were on goal and one other hit the post, but none were able to find their way into the goal. UW-Platteville only managed three shots in the first half but were the first team on the scoreboard with a header from Tommy Bitter off of a corner kick in the 35th minute to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead, which would remain the score until halftime.

The Pioneers opened up the second half with a quick goal, again coming off of a corner kick. UD responded in the 60th minute as Felipe Sanchez found the back of the net after a throw in from Patrick Regal. After UW-Platteville added another goal in the 67th minute, the Spartans once again responded as Danny Daniels answered with a goal on a free kick to get the Spartans within one goal with about nine minutes left but could not squeeze out another goal.

The Spartans put up 25 shots in the contest with nine of those being on goal, while holding the Pioneers to only eight shots and seven on goal. Malcolm Phillips led UD with nine shots on the afternoon and three on net, with Gonzalo Hernadez adding seven more.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday night at 7:30, as they take on the Coe College Kohawks in the final game of the regular season at Oyen Field in Dubuque.
