Spartans Season Comes To End At IIAC Tournament

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In the second round of the Iowa Conference Tournament, the University of Dubuque baseball team fell victim to a ninth inning rally from Luther College and lost 3-4.
The game started out with a bang as Luther put runners on first and second with when out and tried a double steal but UD's Will Doherty threw out the runner trying to steal third. The next batter drilled a line drive to center field and looked like it would give Luther an early lead by UD center field, Austin McWhite, came up and fired a strike to catcher Will Doherty to get the runner at the plate and keep the score tied at zero.
UD carried that momentum over to the bottom half of the inning where they reached on an error and drew two straight walks before grounding into a fielder's choice to score a run and move ahead 1-0. The Spartans took advantage of another Norse error in the third inning when Jarad Clevenger reached on an error and was eventually brought around to score on a Thomas Kempf RBI single to left field to make it a 2-0 game.
It was a 3-2 UD lead heading into the top of the ninth inning when the leadoff hitter in the inning tipled to start a Norse rally. After a batter was hit by pitch and a double to right field, the game was tied at 3-3 and there was still no one out in the inning. The next batter hit a fly ball to right field that looked like it gave Luther the lead as the runner from third tagged up and scored. UD's pitcher, Nathan Schneiderman, was alert and appealed to third base and the runner was called out for leaving early to keep the game tied. However, the next batter dribbled a ball to first base and reached on an infield single to give Luther a 4-3 lead.
Will Doherty and Jack Lasswell both came up with one out hits in the bottom half of the ninth but that was all the Spartans could come up with and fell just short.
The Spartans end the season with a school record 23 overall wins.
