Spartans Show Success at Drake Relays and Kip Janvrin Invite

DES MOINES/INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's and men's track and field teams battled rain and strong competition at the 108th Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Invite. A rainy, wet weekend of intense track and field competition couldn't dampen the spirits of the 1000's of student-athletes competing at two of the top meets of the spring outdoor season.

Women's (108th Drake Relays hosted by Drake University)

Tanasha Atwater tossed 14.12m in shot put to place 13/24 competitors (top Division III competitor in shot put)
distance medley relay (Wenthold, Beeman, Romagna, Ortiz) place 5/17 teams in 12:09.39 - new UD school record!
4x100m relay (Zbilski, Enis, Flowers, Beeman) - :49.58, 23/35 teams
4x200m relay (Zbilski, Enis, Flowers, Beeman) - 1:46.66, 12/16 teams

Men's (108th Drake Relays hosted by Drake University)

sprint medley relay(Ellis, Kind, Pointer, and Klose) - 3:34.74, 1721 teams
4x100m relay (Kind, Gray, Ellis, Pointer) - :42.47, 11/34 teams
4x200m relay - (Kind, Gray,Ellis Pointer ) - 1:29.95, 10/19 teams
Blaze Murfin 15.64m in shot put 15/25 competitors
Alex Link throws season best 49.62m in discus, 12/24 competitors (2nd among DIII competitors). He sits 10th in nation.

 

Event winners (Kip Janvrin Invite hosted by Simpson College)
Fabiola Ortiz - 1500m / 4:36.42 / Personal Best / UD school record  
                            16th in NCAA DIII / Fabiola reacted to the slow pace 
                             early on and committed to a move that broke the field 
                             with just over 800m to go. This effort, given the 
                             conditions and talent level of the field, is one of her 
                             best performances to date.

Blaze Murfin - Shot Put / 3rd place / 14.86m  
                          - Discus / 4th place / 48.06m / Season best throw & top      
                             DIII performer at the meet in discus

Women's 4x100m (Aleyha Slatter, Monet Lewis, Tierra Hildebrandt, 
                             MichelleAnn Sanchez / 53.14 seconds / 6th place 
Clayton Gray - 110m Hurdles / 15.55 seconds / 9th place / First place 
                             among DIII competition in the event
Jenna Heimark - Triple Jump / 10.55m / 8th place / First place among 
                             DIII competition
Abby Willis - Javelin Throw / 34.10m / 2nd place / Weather conditions 
                             and extremely poor footing proved to be the limiting 
                             factor for distances thrown in competition, however, 
                             she came to compete and placed well.
Men's 4x400m (Jacob Mentzer, Chad Manternach, Aaron Ofosu, 
                              Easton Cook) / 3:29.46 / 3rd place
