Spartans Still in IIAC Tournament Hunt Despite Loss at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s basketball team dropped a conference road game at Simpson on Wednesday night, 69-79.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, leading by as much as 10 in the first half, but the Storm battled back and took the lead with 5:22 remaining in the first half and the Spartans could never regain the lead. UD cut Simpson’s lead to a one possession game multiple times in the second half, but could not quite get over that hump to take the lead again.

After shooting just 37.9% (11-29) from the field in the first half, the Spartans shot a staggering 60.9% (14-23) in the second half, including six threes. However, Simpson was just as hot as UD was shooting in the second half, as they shot 63% (17-27). A key deferential in this game came at the free throw line, the Spartans were only able to go 9-20 from the charity stripe, as Simpson went 16-23.

Jacob Mohlis found his shooting touch tonight as he dropped 19 points on six of nine shooting. Mohlis also dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds to fill out his stat sheet. Henry Thompson performed well off the bench as he connected on five three pointers for his 15 points. Jake Weber continues his double-double tear as he collected 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Spartans are in still in the race to get into the IIAC Tournament. With three games to play, UD is in sixth place, which is the last seed that makes it into the tournament. 

The Spartans will honor their four seniors on Senior Night on Saturday afternoon, as they host Nebraska Wesleyan University at 4:00 p.m. at the Stoltz Sports Center.
