UD Top-10 Moments: Honorable Mentions

With the Top-10 UD moments on the way, five noteworthy accomplishments didn’t quite make the cut, but were plenty worthy in a year full of championships and record-setting performances for Spartan athletics. Each of the five honorable mention candidates set a new standard in their respective sports and aim to continue that trend into the 2016-17 Spartan season!

Baseball clinches first IIAC Tournament berth since 2005
The Spartans finished with a 19-23, 12-16 IIAC record, highlighted by three wins over Loras and their first-ever, four-game conference sweep against Central, to clinch the five seed and a trip to Cedar Rapids for the IIAC Tournament.

Men’s Soccer reaches first IIAC tournament title game
Led by IIAC offensive MVP, forward Gonzalo Hernandez, the Spartans clinched the two-seed with a 12-6-1, 5-2 IIAC record and defeated Luther in the IIAC semifinals, 1-0, to reach the IIAC title game against Loras.

Women’s Lacrosse sets school wins record for second-straight season

Highlighted by a seven-game winning streak and a single-season record of 55 goals by Kelly Wetherald, the Spartans set a school wins record with 11 victories.

Arantxa Martinez finishes Flight A Singles runner-up at IIAC tournament for second-straight season
Already arguably the best player in program history and only a rising junior, Martinez fell in the IIAC Flight Singles Championship for the second-straight year as she became the only player in UD history to be named All-IIAC twice.

Wrestling breaks dual wins record and brings on assistant coach and former Olympic gold medalist Ben Peterson

With the assistance of former Olympic gold medalist, Ben Peterson, the Spartans utilized an eight-dual win streak and IIAC wins over Loras, Buena Vista, and Simpson to set the school record with 13 dual victories.
