Vikings Stave Off Spartans In CCIW Matchup

DUBUQUE, Iowa- In a matchup of teams that came into the game 1-0 in CCIW play, the University of Dubuque women's lacrosse team came up just short against the Augustana College Vikings on Wednesday evening, falling 12-15.

In a back and fourth first half, that featured five ties and four lead changes, the game went into halftime with the Spartans trailing 6-7. The Spartans tied things up with a quick goal in the first minute of the second half off of a shorthanded goal from Clarie Carlson. 

The Vikings would take the lead 45 seconds later on a goal from Emily Lucnik and the Vikings would not surrender their lead for the reamainder of the contest. After Sara Rose scored her third goal of the season to make it a 8-9 game, the Vikings would go ahead and score the next four goals to put the Spartans five goals behind with 15:41 remaining.

The Spartans continued to fight as Robyn Wittkopf scored three of her five goals in the final 11:28 of action and would get another goal from Alora Esparza but the Spartans rally ran out of time. Wittkopf also added one assist on the night.

To go along with Wittkopf's five goals, freshman Claire Carlson added four of her own on just seven shots. Alora Esparza pitched in two goals, as Sara Rose found the back of the net once to close out the scoring for the Spartans. 

Kyra Nelson played all 60 minutes in the nets for UD, giving up 15 goals but collected 11 saves .

This weekend, UD travels to Bloomington, Illinois to take on Illinois Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m.
