Volleyball Suffer Pair of League Road Losses

Oct 1, 2016

PELLA/INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team (10-10 overall, 1-4 in IIAC) battled through three competitive league matches this week and were looking to set the pace and possibly lock in a spot in the conference tournament. Two five set losses and a four set loss on Saturday morning would postpone the Spartans celebration.

UD will be looking to rally back this week as they host two league matches in Stoltz Sports Center on Friday (vs. Nebraska Wesleyan Univ.) and on Saturday (vs. Buena Vista Univ.). Two more wins and the Spartans will be right back in the battle for one of the six qualifying spots in the 2016 IIAC volleyball Tournament to be hosted for the first time at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

A couple of bounces and serves in Friday night's match would be the difference in a tightly contested five set match (2-3; 25-17, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 4-15). Setter Alyssa Cose (44 set assists) would find attackers Karrah Davis who led with 16 kills and Lauren Egnarski who hit 12. Eleven service errors, seven receiving errors and 27 attack errors by the Spartans would allow the host Storm to capture the match.

Saturday morning, after a short drive to Pella, UD opened quickly with a 25-23 victory in set one before Central would win the next three sets 26-24, 25-20, 25-16 to earn the IIAC win.

A trio of Spartans led the offense with Davis grabbing 16 kills, Egnarski 11 kills, and Kendall Kaufmann 11 kills. Both teams defensive efforts combined for 170 digs in the match with the Spartans holding the edge 86-84. Alyssa Cose led with 20 digs as teammates Grace Strawser and Davis had 18 digs.

UD will prepare for a busy week at home with Nebraska Wesleyan University (9-7 overall, 2-2 in IIAC) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 and Buena Vista University (11-9 overall, 2-1 in IIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1:00 p.m.
