Women's Basketball Lose in Season Opener

WINONA, Minn. - The University of Dubuque 2016-17 women's basketball season tipped off on Monday evening on the road and the Spartans lost the opener 64-76. UD's Allie Biermeier led the Spartans offense with 18 points as Emily Brinker finished with 12 points. Abbey Meyer added nine points and Cece Pope came off the bench to finish with eight points and a team high six rebounds.

UD trailed after the first period 15-19 and were outscored in the second 16-28. The Spartans returned from halftime and narrowed the lead after a 17-11 run in the third before the hosts finished with a 18-16 fourth quarter edge to capture the non-conference contest over the Spartans 76-64. Fourteen Spartans saw action in Tuesday's game.

UD sank 24-63 shot attempts (38.1%) for the game, made 4-17 attemps from beyond the three point arc (23.5%) and connected on 12-16 free throw attempts (75%). Saint Mary's held a slim rebounding margin 36-33, but were hot from the outside sinking 10-24 three point attempts (41.7%). The Spartans forced the hosts into committing 20 turnovers in the game and were able to convert them into 21 points down the stretch. Saint Mary's outscored the Spartans in the paint 20-8 and were able to utilize their bench for 23 points as UD's bench finished with 17 points.

The Spartans will travel to play in the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 18-19 and will face face Calvin College (Mich.) in the opening game at 8:00 p.m. on Nov. 18. The Spartans first home game on Jon Davison Court in Stotz Sports Center will be on Nov. 22 against the Augustana College Vikings at 5:30 p.m.
