Women's Tennis Off to a 2-0 Start

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's tennis team finished their opening weekend with a sweep of Iowa Conference opponents to start the 2016-17 season 2-0.

The Spartans dropped just two singles matches as they hit past the Buena Vista University Beavers 7-2. UD swept the doubles as #1 Arantxa Martinez/Marissa Joers won 8-0, #2 Ines Albino/Naomi Amani earned victory 9-1, and #3 team of Megan Ranney/Mariah Scott won 8-5 to give UD an early 3-0 lead in the match.

The Beavers claimed #5 and #6 singles as UD rallied to capture #1 through #4 singles. Martinez won #1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Albino won #2 singles 6-1, 6-3. Joers won #3 singles 6-2, 6-2 and at #4 singles Ashley Palacios Quinanyz won 6-1, 6-0.

In the second match of the day, UD swung past Nebraska Wesleyan 9-0 after taking #1 doubles 8-4, #2 doubles 8-1, and #3 doubles by forfeit. In singles Martinez won #1 singles 6-0, 6-1; Albino won #2 singles 7-6, 6-4; Joers won #3 singles 6-2, 6-1; Quinanyz won #4 singles 6-3, 6-3; Amano won #5 singles 7-5, 6-3; and Scott won by a forfeit at #6 singles.

"Today we played our first matches of the season and I am really pleased with our ladies performance," commented head coach Claudio Giraldi. "We have a lot to improve and although we are celebrating our two victories, we are aware we have a long road ahead of us with matches against strong teams. Monday we will be back on the court to get ready for the rival match againsl Loras College on Tuesday."

"I also want to mention how well our freshmen competed in their first collegiate matches," Giraldi added. " The talented underclassmen showed great focus and determination as well as Martinez who contines to impress with her streak of wins at #1 singles and #1 doubles with teammate Joers."

Tuesday the Spartans will travel across town to meet the Loras College Duhawks on Sept. 6 at 4:00 p.m.
