Baseball Picked Second in Iowa Conference

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Iowa Conference baseball coaches voted the University of Dubuque baseball team second in the Iowa Conference. Wartburg was selected to win the Iowa Conference with six first place votes; UD was the only other school to receive first place votes with three.

The Spartans are coming off a record breaking 2017 season, setting the school record with 23 overall wins and 17 conference wins. UD head coach Paul Wyczawski was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year and eight different Spartans earned All-Iowa Conference honors.

The Spartans return five All-Iowa Conference honorees in 2018, including three on the mound from the pitching staff that led the Iowa-Conference in team ERA in 2017. Nathan Schneiderman had the best ERA in the Iowa Conference in 2017 at 0.47 and earned four saves. Chase Kueter owned the third best ERA in the conference with an ERA of 1.45. Doug Van Dyke rounds out the trio and led the Spartans and IIAC with six wins.

Thomas Kempf returns after leading the Iowa Conference in batting average (.396) and on base percentage (.470). Kempf also racked up 30 RBI and 11 doubles. Will Doherty is back for his senior season after starting all 40 games behind the plate for the Spartans in2017, where he hit .277 with 20 RBI. Doherty drew a team-high 29 walks and was hit by nine pitches. 

UD kicks off the season on March 2nd in Greenville, Illinois, taking on Greenville College.
