Baseball Racks Up IIAC Postseason Accolades

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Iowa Conference announced the 2018 Baseball All-Conference Team on Wednesday, naming UD Head Coach Paul Wyczawski, Coach of the Year and 10 UD student-athletes over the three all-conference teams.

Chase Kueter, Nathan Schneiderman and Dalton Garst were the three Spartans to be voted First Team All-Iowa Conference. This is the second time each has been selected first team all-conference in their careers.

Kueter (Bellevue, Iowa), finished the regular season fourth among all Iowa-Conference pitchers with a 2.25 ERA over his 12 appearances, second with a school-record of strikeouts with 75 and lead the conference with six complete games and 88 innings pitched. Kueter went 7-4, while limiting opposing batters to a .199 batting average, the lowest among all eligible pitchers in the IIAC. In his 2018 campaign, Kueter allowed 32 runs, 22 of them earned and only walked nine batters out of the 326 faced.

Nathan Schneiderman (German Valley, Ill.) set a single season school record in saves with eight in 2018, the second most in the Iowa Conference. Over his 17 appearances, 15 coming out of the bullpen, Schneiderman totaled an ERA of 3.16 over 37 innings. He struck out 52 of 138 batters faced and allowed just seven extra base hits out of his 33 hits allowed.

Garst (Winnebago, Ill.) picks up his third All-Conference honor after being first team in 2015 and second team in 2016. Garst hit .384 in conference play and .346 overall during his senior season, which was the second highest mark on the team and ninth in the IIAC. He started all 39 games he played in, recording 55 hits, five behind the school record of 60 in a season, adding eight doubles, two triples and two home runs. Gartst scored 37 runs of his own while also driving in 23 and walked 21 times.

Five Spartans were named Second Team All-Iowa Conference on Wednesday. Doug Van Dyke, Jack Lasswell, Jarad Clevenger, Justin Jensen and Thomas Kempf were all honored for their play in 2018. Doug Van Dyke (Bartlett, Ill.) accumulated a 6-2 record in his senior season with one complete game. Van Dyke, fanned 61 batters, aloowed just 27 runs, 23 of them earned, and scattered 63 hits over 69.1 innings.

Jack Lasswell (Crystal Lake, Ill.) hit .341 during his junior campaign, recording a team-high 56 hits in 39 games, while also walking 19 times. Out of his 56 hits, seven of them were doubles. He also drove in 23 runs and scored 34 of his own in 2018. Jarad Clevenger (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Spartans with a .360 batting average over 35 games and 114 at bats. To go along with his .360 average, Clevenger had 22 RBI’s, scored 20 runs and hit eight doubles and walked 11 times.

Justin Jenson (Morrison, Ill.) had the third best batting average of any Spartan during the regular season, batting .342 in 24 games but hit .380 in 14 conference games. Jensen doubled seven times, drilled two home runs , drove in 18 runs and scored 24 times. Thomas Kempf (Chicago, Ill.) rounds out the second team all-conference selections for UD after hitting .323 with 27 RBI’s in 2018. Kempf hit nine doubles, one home run, slugged .417 and was hit by a team-high five pitches.

Tyler Lewan (Golden, Colo.) and Will Doherty (Cross Plains, Wis.), both seniors, closed out their UD careers with IIAC Honorable Mention honors. Doherty, a mainstay behind the plate over his career, had a batting average of .341 this season and drove in a team-high 37 RBI’s. Doherty also recorded 209 putouts and 13 assists for a fielding percentage of .974. Lewan played in 28 games, starting 22, most coming at shortstop, on his way to hitting .295 in 95 at bats. Lewan totaled 39 bases, hit six doubles, one triple and one home run with 15 RBI’s.

After leading the Spartans to program best 24 wins and the program’s first Iowa Conference regular season and tournament titles, as well as their first NCAA Tournament bid, Coach Paul Wyczawski was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.
