Big Fourth Quarter Propels Spartans Past Eagles

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team wrapped up their third road contest in six days with a 12-6 win over Northwestern behind Michael Jango’s five goals.

Michael Julius began the game with a goal just 1:06 in however, Northwestern responded with four unanswered goals. As the Spartans started to mount their comeback and with time winding down in the second quarter, Joe Furnstahl scored an unassisted goal with five seconds remaining to tie the game at 5-5 heading into halftime.

Three minutes after Northwestern tied the score at 6-6 with 13:43 remaining in the game, Michael Jango scored a goal to give UD a 7-6 lead. Two and a half minutes later, Michael Julius took a long pass from behind the net and fired a rocket into the net and give UD breathing room. The Spartans would continue the fourth quarter onslaught with four more goals in the game’s final six minutes, including two from Michael Jango to give him five on the afternoon.

Kyle Mullins recorded seven saves against the Eagles, five of which came in the third quarter. To go along with Jango’s five goals, Michael Julius and Jake Olsen recorded a combined four goals and three assists.

UD dominated nearly every facet of the game, outshooting Northwestern 45-21, winning 13 of 20 faceoffs and picking up 27 ground balls to the Eagles 13. The Spartans were a perfect nine of nine on clears, while forcing the Eagles into four failed clear attempts.  

The Spartans return home to take on Illinois Wesleyan on March 20th at 7:30 p.m.
