DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team dropped another close contest on Wednesday night, losing to Coe College, 76-72.

The Spartans got off to a hot start, beginning the game on a 12-4 run over the opening 5:23 and outscoring the Kohawks 24-14 in the first quarter. However, things flipped dramatically in the second quarter as the Kohawks would outscore UD 24-10 in the frame and take a 38-34 lead into halftime.

The UD deficit would stay between four to 10 points for the entire third quarter before the Spartans finally broke through and grabbed a 61-60 lead with 8:18 remaining after Crystal Rios three pointer. The lead would change five more times over the next four minutes after the teams traded three pointers including two from UD’s Lexi Daniels. Trailing 75-69 with 1:35 remaining, UD’s Josephine Thomas drilled a three pointer and the Spartans forced a turnover to give the Spartans one more chance to tie the score but Thomas could not connect on another three and the Kohawks would make a free throw to seal the game.

Abbey Meyer and Crystal Rios powered the Spartan scoring on the night, both finishing with 20 points. Meyer totaled a double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds and also dished out a game high six assists. Rios and Morgan Boer were second on the team in rebounds with seven each.

The long ball helped keep the Spartans in the contest, as they outshot the Kohawks from behind the arc, making 12-34 (35.3%), while holding Coe to 7-25 (28%) from three.

The Spartans have another home contest on Saturday afternoon when they host Nebraska Welseyan at 2:00 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center
