Football Held Scoreless on the Road

WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team couldn't find the endzone on Saturday and lost to the #16-ranked Wartburg College Knights 0-23. It's the first time for a UD team coached by Stan Zweifel to be held scoreless and the first since Sept. 3 2005. 

The Knight held the Spartans to 190 yards of total offense (88 rushing and 102 passing). Penalties continued to thwart UD and it cost them 112 yards in nine penalties. Maurece Herrion carried the ball 32 times for 73 yards and Conor Feckley passed the ball 7-14 times for 52 yards and Michael Briscoe was 3-11 for 49 yards. The receiving corps of Emanuel Jenkins caught three passes for 45 yards, Dylan Schultz grabbed four for 32 yards and Sam Morton caught two for 17 yards. Jackson Lage punted eight times for 201 yards (25.1 average). Kody Riemer returned four kickoffs for 62 yards for a 21 yard average.

Derek Trotter led the defense with eight tackles followed by Derek Schambow and Le'Devin Smith who each collected seven. Doug Gates captured the Spartans lone sack with a loss of five yards. Johnny Higgins intercepted a Knights pass and finished with three tackles.

The Spartans 5-3 overall, 3-3 in the IIAC return home for Senior Day next Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m. on Chalmers Field. UD will host the Coe College Kohawks (3-5 overall, 1-5 in the IIAC). Both teams will be looking to bounce back after a loss, Coe lost to Luther College 28-36 in three overtimes in Cedar Rapids this weekend.
