CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s basketball team kept their chances at an Iowa Conference Tournament berth alive with a 70-53 win over the Coe College Kohawks.

In an evenly played first half, neither team had a lead by more than six points and that came when the Spartans were up 8-2 in the early moments of action. Marcus McDaniel had the hot hand for the Spartans in the first half, scoring 18 of the team’s 36 points on 7-11 shooting and 4-5 from three. McDaniel drilled a three pointer right before the halftime buzzer to put the Spartans ahead 36-31 at halftime. Both teams shot above 40% in the first half with the Spartans at 45.2% and Coe at 41.7%.

The Spartans carried the momentum over from that McDaniel buzzer into the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the second half to build a 47-31 lead. After the early second half run from UD, their lead would never shrink below nine points for the remainder of the game.

McDaniel stayed hot in the second half, finishing with a career-high 28 points. His previous career-high was 23 points and came earlier this season against Nebraska Wesleyan. TJ Lake scored nine of his 13 points in the second half. Michael Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while also adding 10 points.

After letting the Kohawks shoot 41.7% in the first half, the Spartans limited the Kohawks to 25.9% in the second half. UD outshot Coe 45% to 33.3% for the game. The Spartans dominated points off turnovers, scoring 17 points off 14 Coe turnovers, while Coe only scored three points off seven UD turnovers.

The Spartans play their final two regular season contests at home next week. UD will host Luther College at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday night and Loras College at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
