Melise and Kalbrenner Lead Spartan Wrestling at 25th Annual Concordia Open

MEQUON, Wis. - The University of Dubuque wrestling team competed in the 25th Annual Concordia University Open on Saturday, Nov. 18 against plenty of quality ranked wrestlers. Teams who competed were: Concordia Wisconsin, Elmhurst, Harper (Ill.), Lakeland, Loras, MSOE, North Central, Triton (Ill.), Chicago, UD, UW-LaCrosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Parkside, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, Wabash, Wartburg and Wheaton.
As one of the premier early season tournaments in the NCAA Division III, the 25th CUW Wrestling Open will again prove to be a strong test for the first month of the season. The Spartan placewinners included Robert Melise (285 lbs.) who finished fourth and returning national qualifier and #8-ranked Quincy Kalkbrenner (157 lbs.) who placed fifth in a bracket that included three Top-10 ranked wrestlers.
Melise opened with a hard fought 1-0 decision over Wartburg's Kaleb Staack. In the second round he won by a fall in 2:02 over Lakeland's Michael Grabe. In the semifinals he lost to Loras's Quin Gilliam by a fall in 1:56. In the match for third place he lost to Wartburg's Bowen Wileman by a 12-4 major decision.
Kalkbrenner won by a 7-3 decision over North Central's Matt Pandocchi. In the second round he wn bt a 5-2 decision over Elmhurst's Gunnar Hjorth. Wartburg's Max Forsyth captured the one point victory 6-5 in the quarterfinals. Kalkbrenner beat Harper College's Michial Foy in the consolation round four and Wartburg's Shea Hartzier in the consolation semifinals by a 6-0 mark. He won by a fall in 1:08 over UW-Parkside's Tre Vaughn Craig to place fifth.
