Men's Track and Field Go Back-to-Back in IIAC Indoor Championships

2018 IIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (FINAL RESULTS)
PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's track team stepped up this weekend and claimed their second in a row IIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship for head coach Chad Gunnelson. The championship also earned the Spartans, the Staff of the Year Award for the second consecutive year as well and Male Field Athlete of the Year was earned by junior Blaze Murfin who once again dominated the throws and UD claimed six individual titles.
"For us coming in we knew it was going to an incredible battle," commented Gunnelson. "We were projected to finish third and we needed incredible efforts and incredible persistence all weekend. Proud of the guys for what they did and a chance to fight through and battle in such a tough conference and such tough competition and come out on top again. It was a wonderful feeling."
The Spartans captured their second indoor championship with a strong showing in the field events winning all, but two events. Excitement for the final event (4x400m relay) put the pressure on the Spartans. UD's relay did what it needed to do in the meet's final event, finishing third and holding off second-place Central. The Dutch were fourth in the final relay and ended up just seven points shy of the Spartans (131-138).
The women's team placed fourth with 91.5 points just a half a point out of third place. UD claimed two individual titles, Brittany Burks in 60m hurdles in :09.03 and Kelsey Betthauser in the weight throw with a toss of 16.70m/54-09.50.
