Spartans Edged Out By Luther

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In front of a raucous crowd, the University of Dubuque wrestling team came up short against Luther College on Friday night despite each team winning five matches, falling 22-19.
UD's first win of the night came at 141 in a thrilling match. Trailing 3-2 late in the second, UD's Blake Howerton got a late takedown and road out Luther's Tyler Menegay to take a 4-3 advantage into the final period. Howerton woud come up with two more take downs in the third, including one with 30 seconds left to seal the match and win 9-5. Quincy Kalkbrenner continued to roll for the Spartans, starting his match at 157 with a quick takedown and not allowing a point to defeat Andrew Schmidt, 6-0.
The Spartans ended the match on a hot streak, taking the final three matches. Chris Nielsen started the run with his 5-2 decision at 184 before Ethan Cain dominated from start to finish at 197 for a 12-3 major decision. To close out the match at 285, Daniel Petrela made quick work of Dakotah Daffinson, pinning him in just 1:24. However, Luther's bonus points from their three technical falls were too much to overcome in the team score.
UD heads to their crosstown rival next Friday night, taking on Loras at 7:00 p.m.
