Spartans Head to NCAA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Five members of the Univeristy of Dubuque track and field team head to the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama on March 9th and 10th.
Senior Tanahsa Atwater, junior Rebecca Burmahl, freshman Kelshawn Johnson, junior Blaze Murfin, sophomore Colfay Pointer will represent UD in six events over the course of the weekend.
“This is a mighty group that has put down their best performances when it mattered most,” said UD Director of track and field Chad Gunnelson. “I’m excited for them and their opportunity to represent the team, the program, and our University, at the NCAA Championships this weekend. This is a great way to finish an incredible indoor season, but we’re not done yet!”
Atwater is making her third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships for the shot put. The 2017 Indoor All-American and Outdoor National Champion, comes into the 2018 meet as the eighth seed with a season best toss of 13.97m.
Burmahl comes into her first NCAA Indoor Championship as the 13th seed in the weight throw. Her season best throw of 17.43m came on March 2nd at the UW-Platteville Qualifying meet.
Kelshawn Johnson is making lone Spartan freshman to qualify for the championships after an outstanding start to his collegiate career. Johnson comes into the championships as the 15th seed in the 60m hurdles with a best mark of 8.19 seconds.
Pointer is set to participate in his first NCAA Division III Indoor Championships as the sixth seed in the 400m. The 2018 Iowa Conference Indoor Champion comes into the NCAA Championships with a mark of 48.80 seconds.
Murfin, an indoor All-American in both the weight throw and shot put in 2017 and a qualifier for the indoor championships in 2016 for the weight throw, comes into the 2018 indoor championships as the three seed in the shot put (17.16m) and eighth in the weight throw (18.87m).
The NCAA Indoor Championships is being run at the Birmingham CrossPlex and hosted by Birmingham-Southern College. Tickets are available at https://www.magiccitytix.com/index.shtm.
