Spartans Win Streak Snapped at 12

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball's historic run to start the season came to an end on Wednesday night as they dropped a a five set thriller to Loras, 3-2. The Spartans are now 12-1 on the year, it was the most consective wins to start a season since 1981 when the program started 15-0.

UD jumped out to a seven point lead early in set one and looked like they would coast to a set one win but Loras fought their way back, which was a theme for both team tonight. Loras took a 24-23 and then again 25-24 but UD got kills from Alyssa Cose and Karrah Davis, as well as an attack error by Loras to comeback and take the first set. In the second set, it was the Duhawks turn to jump out to a big lead before the Spartans were able to rally and tie the set at 24 a piece. However, the Spartans could not take the lead and Loras would score the next two points to even the match at 1-1.

Loras carried the momentum over from the second set and rolled past UD is set three and to take a 2-1 lead in the match. With their backs against the wall, the Spartans and down 15-10 in the fourth set, they rattled off 12 straight points to take a 22-15 lead and sending the crowd into a frenzy. Loras could not mount much of a push after that and UD took the set 25-19 to force a deciding fifth set.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the fifth set, Loras scored four straight points and would not let UD get any closer than two points the rest of the way to take the match and end the Spartans win streak.

Karrah Davis, the reigning IIAC Offensive Player of the Week, had 72 total attacks on the night, coming up with 23 kills. Davis also added 12 digs and two sets. Jenna Runde was everywhere for the Spartans on defense, coming up with 27 digs. Kara Wright came up with nine kills against the Duhawks, the second most for the Spartans in the game. As a team, the Spartans had five total blocks, led by Rylee Andresen with three solo blocks. 

The Spartans head to Pella, Iowa this weekend for four matches as Central College hosts the IIAC/NACC Crossover Tournament.
