Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season With Strong Showing

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Dubuque track and field teams battled to cold conditions at the Cornell Invitational on Thursday night with the men winning the team title and the women coming in second place.
The women had four first place finishers on Thursday and 11 finishers in the top three to finish with 149 team points, 14.5 behind the winning team. The Spartans grabbed first and second place in both the hammer throw and discus. In the hammer, Rebecca Burmahl took home the title with a toss of 50.20 meters and Tanasha Atwater was right behind her at 49.69 meters. Abigail Willis won the discus with a long toss of 41.29 meters, while Kayla Slowick came in second at 40.48 meters.
On the men’s side UD brought home the team points title with 202 points after 15 top three finishes. This included the Spartans dominating the medal stand in the triple jump and discus as UD had the top three place finishers in both events. The Spartans would also grab first and second place in both the shot put and long jump. Blaze Murfin won three individual events on Thursday, bringing home gold in the shot put, hammer throw and discus.
