Track and Field Wraps Up Busy Weekend

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Dubuque track and field teams had a busy weekend, participating in the Jack Jennet Open hosted by the University of Northern Iowa on Friday and the UW-Platteville Select on Saturday. The UD women's team took first place at the UW-Platteville Select, with the men taking second place.

The Spartans held their own on Friday at the Jack Jennet Open, going up against several Division I teams, such as the University of Northern Iowa, Chicago State and Loyola (Ill.). Blaze Murfin was the lone Spartan to win an event, winning the weight throw with a best throw of 17.46m. Two UNI throwers finished right behind Murfin in second and third place. The women finished in sixth out of 11 teams with 29.50 team points and the men finished sixth out of 14 teams with 45 points.

Both the men and women’s teams had an impressive day at the UW-Platteville Select, winning 10 events, seven on the men’s side and three on the women’s side. Between the UD men’s and women’s teams, the Spartans had 28 top three finishes on Saturday. In route to the women's first place team finish, the Spartans put up 229.50 points, 82 points better than second place finisher, UW-Platteville. UD and UW-Platteville traded places on the men's side with Platteville finishing with 252 team points in first and UD with 181.50 points. The next closet team closed the meet with 49 points.

The Spartans had the same athlete win the 60m dash and 200m dash on both the women and men’s side. On the women’s side, Allison Beeman took the 60m dash in a personal best time of 7.99 and the 200m in 26.73. For the men, Kyle Thomas continues to rack up the top finishes, winning the 60m dash in 6.96, just hundredth of a second behind his best time. Thomas also took the 200 in 22.32.

Part of the impressive day came at the weight throw on the women’s side, where Lauren Egnarski took home the title with a personal-best throw of 15.40m. The Spartans went on to have the top seven finishers in the event.
