DUBUQUE, Iowa - After sweeping conference foe Simpson College last night, the University of Dubuque volleyball team swept another conference opponent in Central College on Saturday morning, 25-12,25-14,25-21.
Saturday's match was never in much doubt for the Spartans, as they wasted no time jumping out to big leads in each of the first two sets. The third set was a battle as the Spartans trailed 13-12, when the Spartans then rattled off seven of the next eight points to build a 19-14 lead. The Dutch came back to make it a 23-21 game in favor of UD but the Spartans defense stepped up and came up with two straight blocks to give them the set and match victory.
In a match that lasted just over an hour, the Spartans were very efficent on offense and had staggering hitting percentages in the first two sets of .308 and .500, with 26 total attempts in each of those sets. Karrah Davis had 11 kills and just four errors against the Dutch, as Rylee Andresen added eight more as those two teamed up for over half of UD's 36 kills.
Everyone added something on defensive against Central as eight different Spartans had a dig, including four with eight or more. Karrah Davis and Jenna Runde both came up with nine digs each, while Kara Wright and Alyssa Cose had eight digs. To go with her eight digs, Wright added to her team leading block total of 58 with one solo block and two block assists. Rylee Andresen, who is second on the team in blocks with 56, had two solo blocks of her own.
Spartans will continue Iowa Conference play next weekend as they travel to Nebraska Wesleyan on 10/6 and Buena Vista on 10/7.
