PELLA, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team hit the road on Saturday afternoon, where they fell to the Central College Dutch, 73-55.
Central hit a three pointer six seconds into the game and never allowed UD to get closer than that for the entire game. The Spartans fell behind 11-3 right out of the gate, but chipped away at the deficit and cut it to a 17-14 game at the end of the first quarter after Abbey Meyer beat the buzzer with a jumper. With the UD deficit hanging around six points with 3:34 remaining in the first half, Central went on an 8-2 run to close out the half and build their lead up to 12 points at the break.
The Spartans had one last rally, going on a quick 5-0 run early in the third quarter to make it a 41-35 game in favor of the Dutch, but Central followed that with a 14-4 run of their own and the Spartans were not able to get back within single digits for the rest of the game.
The Spartans shot themselves in the foot offensively, committing 15 turnovers. However, the Spartan defense forced nine steals and the Dutch into committing 17 turnovers. UD was outrebounded 50-34.
Allison Biermeier was the lone Spartan to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 10 points on 3-8 shooting from the field and 2-5 from beyond the arch. Abbey Meyer and Rylee Andresen both finished with eight points, Meyer dished out three assists to go along with her eight points.
The Spartans host the Simpson College Storm at 6:00 on Wednesday night.
