Women's Lacrosse Begins Opening Weekend With Loss

ATCHISON, Kan. – The University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team began their opening weekend of the 2018 campaign with a 21-3 at Benedictine College. 

After an opening six minutes of action with no goals, UD's Claire Carlson scored at the 6:25 mark to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. Benedictine answered quickly, scoring just 23 seconds later to even the match. Benedictine would go on to score nine straight goals over a 12 minute span and would eventually take a 12-2 lead into halftime. 

Breann Tjaarda scored two of the Spartans three goals on Friday afternoon. Tjaarda did that on four shots, all of which went on goal. Both of her goals came on free position shots.

Claire Carlson scored the third goal for the Spartans and also caused four Benedictine turnovers. Carlson and Tjaarda teamed up to win a combined eight of the nine draw control wins for UD. 

After turning the ball over 16 times in the first half, UD settled down and commited just six second half turnovers. The Spartans defense forced the Ravens into 17 turnovers.  

The Spartans will look to rebound tomorrow when they take on Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri at 1:00 p.m.
