Women's Lacrosse Closes Season with Loss

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team closed the 2018 season at home against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, falling 20-4.

Illinois Wesleyan scored the first eight goals of the game before Breann Tjaarda got UD on the board at the 11:47. The Spartans would score two out of three goals when Claire Carlson scored three minutes later. After Carlson’s goal, the Titans defense stifled the Spartan offense and went on to score the next 11 goals. With continuous clock in effect in the second half, the Spartans scored the final two goals of the game, both coming off the stick of Tjaarda.

The Spartans honored three seniors on Saturday, Breann Tjaarda, Katie Silberstein and graduate student Cassandra Berger.

Breann Tjaarda capped her career with a three goals on three shots. She also collected three draw controls, two ground balls and caused two turnovers. In her senior campaign, Tjaarda scored 48 goals, picked up 78 ground balls and won 80 draw controls, leading the Spartans in each category.

Claire Carlson was the only other Spartan to score against the Titans, while also assisted on one of Tjaarda’s goals. Carlson finished second on the team in goals with 35 but led the team with 15 assists to give her 50 points in 2018.

Kaley Weir stopped 18 Illinois Wesleyan shots, finishing with 159 saves this season. Weir was a mainstay in the net for the Spartans in 2018, playing all but 52:50.
